I am passionate about how sensory-perceptual systems can enable us to be more compassionate and understanding, perform faster and more fluently, and become the best version of ourselves. Like musical instruments, I want to develop technologies that can respond to the most subtle human touch and produce beautiful expressions of the ineffable.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help bring this dream to reality, I am helping develop the future of wearable technologies with new sensors, perceptualization, and advanced reasoning optimized for neurophysiology and cognition. I am a highly creative, critical thinker, fluent in many disciplines, and communicate with compassion and clarity. My strengths are my love of learning and humanity. I have experience conducting novel research in behavioral psychology and neurophysiology at the frontiers of audio interaction design, brain-computer interfacing (BCI), artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented\/virtual reality (AR\/VR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PhD<\/strong> &#8211; Georgia Institute of Technology, 2020<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MA<\/strong> &#8211; McGill University, 2013<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>BA<\/strong> &#8211; College of Wooster, 2010<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, I graduated with a PhD in Music Technology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. I completed my dissertation work under <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/music.gatech.edu\/grace-leslie\">Grace Leslie<\/a>, a neuroscientist and electronic musician working at the vanguard of brain-computer musical interfaces (BCMI) and music therapies. While at Georgia Tech, I also worked with <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/people\/bruce-walker\">Bruce Walker<\/a> and members of the <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sonify.psych.gatech.edu\/~walkerb\/\">Sonification Lab<\/a> to design auditory experiences for science education, social media and cancer diagnosis. Through iterative design meetings with <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/per\/people\/emily-b-moore\">Emily Moore<\/a>, some of my sonic interaction designs were deployed in the <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/phet.colorado.edu\/_m\/\">PhET Project<\/a>. My approaches to prototyping and exploratory research were developed early through collaboration with <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/petitinstitute.gatech.edu\/gil-weinberg\">Gil Weinberg<\/a> and the world-renowned <a class=\"rank-math-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gtcmt.gatech.edu\/robotic-musicianship\">Robotic Musicianship Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before coming to Georgia Tech, I earned my MA in Music Technology from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/music\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Schulich School of Music<\/a> at McGill University in Montr\u00e9al, QC. In these formative years, I was fortunate to be surrounded by leaders in the science and technology of music at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cirmmt.org\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT)<\/a>. My thesis research applied sonification methods to data in three areas of contemporary music research: expressive gesture, symbolic music (MIR) and music emotion. I learned a lot from doctoral students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www-new.idmil.org\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Input Devices and Music Interaction Lab<\/a>, and research on Digtial Musical Instruments (DMIs) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/music\/marcelo-m-wanderley\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Marcelo M. Wanderley<\/a>. I developed a passion for Music Perception and Cognition through classes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/spl\/palmer\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Caroline Palmer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/mpcl\/members\/current-members\/stephen-mcadams\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Stephen McAdams<\/a>. I also worked with members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.music.mcgill.ca\/sr\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Sound Recording Program<\/a> under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/music\/george-massenburg\" class=\"rank-math-link\">George Massenberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/music\/richard-king\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Richard King<\/a> to make high-quality classical music concerts and opera accessible to remote audiences through live video production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My knowledge of science, mathematics and research began through a BA in Physics at the College of Wooster. Through the Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) and Independent Thesis programs, I conducted computational and experimental research in granular and particle physics. These experiences occurred while I completed a simultaneous BA in Music (<a href=\"https:\/\/mikewinters.io\/2011\/09\/30\/musical-beginnings\/\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Piano Performance<\/a>). I excelled in the environment of a liberal arts education and graduated cum laude with minors in philosophy and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prospectus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I am looking for opportunities to continue to developing and researching innovative sonic technologies for learning, performance and social connection.
