Everyday, more and more devices are connected to the internet. These devices connect and help us in so many ways, but without protection, they are vulnerable to cyberattack.
I worked with researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to develop a web-sonification system to help security professionals monitor IoT threats in realtime. The user would specify an area on a map, and hear a soundscape representing new devices and threats uncovered by the search engine Shodan.
As new devices enter, the ambient threat level in the area transforms a virtual auditory environment (e.g. beach, jungle, thunderstorm). Each device has a short one-shot sound representing its type. There is a continuous ambient tempo whenever the system is active.
